An outsourced CFO for a UAE e-commerce business should manage four things a generalist accountant usually misses: marketplace and payment-gateway settlements, VAT on cross-border digital sales, inventory-driven cash flow, and the 2026 e-invoicing rollout. This guide sets out what the role covers, the compliance dates that shape it, and a checklist for judging a provider in 2026.
The four numbers an e-commerce CFO owns
- Settlement reconciliation. Every Amazon.ae or Noon payout hides platform fees, commissions and refunds. Until each payout is matched to orders, revenue is overstated and the VAT return is wrong.
- VAT position. Registration becomes mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in a 12-month period, with voluntary registration from AED 187,500 (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 50 — FTA). E-commerce sellers also carry out-of-emirate obligations: goods sold to customers in other emirates are still UAE supplies, and stock held in UAE fulfilment centres is a taxable import.
- Inventory cash flow. An e-commerce balance sheet ties up cash in stock. A CFO forecasts the reorder cycle against the settlement lag so growth does not become a working-capital crisis.
- Compliance calendar. Corporate tax at 0% up to AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% above it (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022), returns and payment due within nine months of the tax-period end (Art. 53 — FD-L 47 of 2022), and Small Business Relief available to businesses with revenue not exceeding AED 3 million for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029 (Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026).
E-invoicing is a 2026 deadline, not a future problem
The UAE's phased e-invoicing regime under Ministerial Decisions No. 64 and 66 of 2026 requires businesses to issue structured, platform-validated invoices through an accredited service provider. Marketplace and B2B-heavy sellers are in the early phases; every seller should map its invoicing flow now. A serious outsourced CFO states your phase and the data changes needed before you ask.
What to require from a provider in 2026
| Area | Standard to expect | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace settlements | Payout-level reconciliation, fees and refunds separated from revenue | Revenue booked as the gross payout |
| VAT | Correct date-of-supply treatment for instalments and advances; invoices issued within 14 days of supply (FD-L 8 of 2017, Art. 67) | VAT charged only when cash clears |
| Corporate tax | Registration in place; models whether Small Business Relief (revenue ≤ AED 3m, periods ending ≤ 31 Dec 2029) beats standard treatment | Unregistered, or a flat 'small companies don't pay' |
| Audit readiness | Knows MD 84 of 2025: audited statements mandatory above AED 50m revenue and for qualifying free zone persons claiming 0% | Audit treated as an afterthought |
| Reporting | Monthly close, contribution margin by SKU, cash-flow forecast | Annual statements only |
Decision aid: what level of finance support fits?
| Your situation | Support level |
|---|---|
| Under AED 375,000 revenue, one channel | Bookkeeping plus an annual VAT/corporate-tax review |
| AED 375,000–3m, growing fast | Part-time outsourced CFO; decide on Small Business Relief with real numbers |
| Above AED 3m, or multi-channel | Ongoing outsourced CFO with e-invoicing and audit preparation ownership |
| Above AED 50m revenue | Statutory audit mandatory (MD 84/2025) — CFO engagement must include audit oversight |
FAQ
Does an online seller in the UAE have to register for VAT?
Once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in a 12-month period, registration is mandatory; voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500. Selling through a marketplace does not remove the seller's own registration duty.
Is corporate tax different for e-commerce businesses?
No. The same rates apply: 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above. A business with revenue up to AED 3 million may elect Small Business Relief for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029.
Do I need audited accounts for my online store?
Under Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025, audited financial statements are mandatory when revenue exceeds AED 50 million in the tax period, and for qualifying free zone persons claiming the 0% rate. Investors and some marketplaces may also request them.
