A wedding planning business in the UAE must record client deposits as liabilities until the event, register for VAT once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in any 12-month period, and keep every financial record for at least seven years. Deposits are generally VAT-taxable when received, and a compliant tax invoice must be issued within 14 days of the supply. Corporate tax of 9% applies above AED 375,000 of taxable income, while qualifying small businesses can elect Small Business Relief for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. Here is what each rule means for a wedding planner in 2026, with the official source beside every claim.
Why wedding planning is a harder bookkeeping job than it looks
Wedding planners in the UAE handle money that is not theirs. A single event moves client deposits in and out months before the wedding, pays 10 to 30 vendors, and spans multiple tax periods. Peak-season revenue and off-season costs rarely land in the same quarter, so the bank balance is a poor guide to profit. Books that mix deposits with earned revenue overstate both profit and VAT payable — the two most common errors an FTA review would find.
Three habits fix most of it:
- Record every client payment to a deposit (liability) account until the event date, then recognise it as revenue.
- Reconcile vendor payments line by line against the client's event budget, so pass-through costs never sit in your own expenses.
- Close the books monthly, not seasonally — the VAT deadlines below do not pause for wedding season.
VAT: the three rules that catch wedding planners
1. Registration is mandatory at AED 375,000 of taxable supplies. A business must register for VAT when the total value of its taxable supplies and imports in the past 12 months exceeds AED 375,000, or is expected to exceed it in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500. Source: Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 on VAT, Art. 50, Federal Tax Authority. Not sure yet? See the advantages of VAT registration.
2. Deposits are usually taxable when received. The date of supply for services is generally the date the services are completed or the date payment is received, whichever is earlier. A deposit received months before a 2027 wedding therefore creates a VAT liability in the quarter it is received, not when the wedding happens. Source: Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 26.
3. Tax invoices are due within 14 days. A registrant must issue a tax invoice within 14 days of the date of supply. Source: Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 67.
Corporate tax and Small Business Relief
UAE corporate tax applies at 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above it (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022). Corporate tax registration is mandatory and late registration carries an administrative penalty of AED 10,000. A business whose revenue does not exceed AED 3 million can elect Small Business Relief for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029 (Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026) — for a planner with AED 2.9 million revenue in a period, that election can reduce the period's corporate tax to zero.
The corporate tax return and any tax are due within nine months of the end of the tax period (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 53). For a calendar-year planner, the return for the year ended 31 December 2025 fell due on 30 September 2026.
Records: seven years, and audited accounts above AED 50 million
Records supporting the return — contracts, tax invoices, bank statements, vendor bills — must be kept for at least seven years from the end of the relevant tax period (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 56). Audited financial statements become mandatory when revenue exceeds AED 50 million in the tax period (Ministerial Decision No. 84 of 2025). Separately, some free-zone authorities require an annual audit as a licence condition regardless of size — check your own licence terms.

FAQ
Do I charge VAT on a booking deposit?
Generally yes. A payment received before the service is completed is an advance, and VAT is due at the earlier of completion or payment — so a deposit received in 2026 is usually a 2026 VAT liability. Confirm the treatment of your specific contract terms with a registered tax agent.
When must my wedding planning business register for VAT?
When your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the past 12 months, or you expect to exceed that within the next 30 days. Voluntary registration is possible from AED 187,500.
Does a small wedding planning business pay corporate tax?
Taxable income up to AED 375,000 is taxed at 0% and anything above at 9%. A business with revenue up to AED 3 million may elect Small Business Relief for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029, which treats the person as having no taxable income for those periods.
Do I need audited accounts?
Only if your revenue exceeds AED 50 million in the tax period, or your licensing authority (for example a free zone) requires an audit as a condition of your licence.
