A mobile app development studio in the UAE carries three structural decisions before it writes a line of code: what legal structure it registers under, whether it charges VAT at all on its services, and how it books cross-border and app-store revenue. This guide sets out the corporate tax position for UAE app development studios as at October 2026 — the 9% rate and who it actually bites, free-zone qualification for studios that build IP, e-invoicing deadlines now entering force, and the bookkeeping decisions that make a studio's tax return defensible.
Corporate tax: the rate and who it actually bites
UAE corporate tax applies to juridical persons — an LLC, a sole establishment with a licence, a free-zone company — at two bands:
- 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000.
- 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000 (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 3; FTA Small Business bulletin).
An app studio with taxable income of AED 500,000 therefore pays 9% only on the AED 125,000 above the threshold — AED 11,250 — not on the whole profit. Studios that stay under AED 3 million of annual revenue may also claim Small Business Relief and treat taxable income as nil, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029 (Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026, amending Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023; MoF announcement, 7 August 2026).
Dates every studio must know
| Obligation | Deadline | Rule and source |
|---|---|---|
| Corporate tax registration | Within three months of the end of the tax period (FTA timelines) | FTA Decision No. 3 of 2024; late registration carries an AED 10,000 penalty (Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023, penalty table) |
| Corporate tax return and payment | Within nine months of the end of the tax period | FTA guidance, 19 August 2025 (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 50) |
| Small Business Relief claim | Elect per tax period; revenue must be at or below AED 3 million | Ministerial Decision No. 131 of 2026 (tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029) |
| E-invoicing readiness | Voluntary/pilot now; mandatory 1 Jan 2027 (revenue ≥ AED 50m) and 1 Jul 2027 (below) | FTA e-Invoicing programme; Ministerial Decision No. 66 of 2026 (FTA, 2026) |
| Record retention | At least 7 years after the end of each tax period | Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 55; FTA guidance, 27 August 2025 |
Revenue recognition: where app studios mis-book income
App revenue rarely arrives when the invoice is raised, and it rarely arrives from the entity you contracted with. Three patterns break standard bookkeeping:
- Retainer development work billed monthly in advance — the VAT date of supply is generally the earliest of invoice issuance, payment due and payment receipt (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 26).
- App-store and platform payouts — the app store is an agent collecting on your behalf; the gross sale amount, not the net payout, is your supply value.
- Upfront licence fees for a product delivered over 12 months — recognised as the service is delivered (IFRS 15, adopted in the UAE for corporate tax purposes via Ministerial Decision No. 114 of 2023).
The corporate tax return is built off the accounting profit, so any one of these mis-bookings flows straight into the return — and the FTA can examine records for at least seven years after the tax period (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 55).
VAT: does an app studio even register?
VAT registration follows the standard thresholds: mandatory above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and imports in 12 months, voluntary from AED 187,500 (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Arts. 17 and 20). An app studio near that ceiling should not wait for a surprise:
- Services to UAE clients — standard-rated at 5% (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 3).
- Services to overseas clients — zero-rated where the recipient is outside the UAE and does not have a place of residence in the UAE (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Art. 30).
- App-store commissions — the commission charged by the store is itself a supply; book it as a cost with input VAT where the store is VAT-registered.
Free-zone studios: the 0% rate is not automatic
A studio licensed in a UAE free zone can qualify for 0% corporate tax on Qualifying Income only where it meets the Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions — qualifying activities, adequate substance in the free zone, and the non-qualifying revenue thresholds (Cabinet Decision No. 55 of 2023, as amended; FTA Free Zone Person bulletin). Software development itself is a qualifying activity, but studios that also resell third-party software, hold physical offices outside the free zone, or run consulting across the border should model their income mix before assuming the 0% rate holds.
Decision aid: the corporate tax readiness check for an app studio
- Confirm the legal entity and its tax period end date.
- Book app-store gross revenue, not net payouts, and book store commissions as cost.
- Release deferred revenue on multi-month licences (IFRS 15).
- Charge VAT at the right rate per client geography; zero-rate overseas services with evidence.
- Track annual revenue against the AED 3 million Small Business Relief threshold.
- Check the corporate tax calendar — registration and filing dates do not wait for profit.
Frequently asked questions
Does a free-zone app studio automatically pay 0% corporate tax? No. A Qualifying Free Zone Person meets specific conditions — qualifying activities, adequate substance, and non-qualifying revenue thresholds (Cabinet Decision No. 55 of 2023, as amended; FTA Free Zone Person bulletin).
When is the corporate tax return due for an app studio? Within nine months of the end of the tax period; registration is due earlier — in general within three months of the end of the tax period (FTA guidance, 19 August 2025; FTA Decision No. 3 of 2024).
Is app-store revenue VAT standard or zero-rated? It depends on the client's location: services to UAE clients are standard-rated at 5%; services to overseas clients with no UAE place of residence are zero-rated (Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, Arts. 3 and 30).
What records must an app studio keep? At least seven years after the end of each tax period (Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, Art. 55; FTA guidance, 27 August 2025).
